Hay Boxes Can Help Prevent Sand Colic

Avoiding Sand Colic is important for the health of your horse. One way to prevent Sand Colic is to construct a special hay box area that minimizes ingested sand and dirt.

To make a hay box, you’ll need an area approximately 100-150 square feet of rubber mats surrounded by railroad ties. Just put the food in the center at ground level. The mats keep the food off the sand and dirt and having to step over the railroad ties keeps the sand and dirt off the mat.

You can also use concrete slabs, railroad tie flooring or deep shavings.

To the right are a few photos of sample hay boxes.

You can read more about how to prevent and treat Sand Colic in a light-hearted yet informative article from our Spring 2006 newsletter.
