Our History

Dr. Robert Miller with a Lion

Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital was the first veterinary hospital established in the Conejo Valley. Dr. Robert Miller, the famed veterinarian and author, founded the hospital in 1958. At that time, Thousand Oaks did not even exist as a city!

Due to the efforts of Dr. Miller and other legendary veterinarians, our hospital has grown to be one of the top facilities in the country serving virtually every type of companion animal—from movie stars to your family pet.

Dr. Robert Miller chose to settle in the Conejo Valley because of its abundance of animal patients. These animals came from numerous ranches, farms, and exotic animal compounds. One of the most famous animal compounds was known as Jungleland, previous home to famous animal friends including Leo, the MGM Lion, and Mr. Ed, the talking horse. Located on the site of the present day Civic Arts Plaza, Jungleland was one of the first theme parks in Southern California. Read about the golden years of CVVH in Dr. Miller’s memoir, Yes, We Treat Aardvarks.

Dr. Robert E. Kind joined Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital in 1961 and practiced here for 37 years. Although he is no longer with us, he has left a truly amazing legacy. His memorial statues can be seen at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and at the teaching hospital at Kansas State University. Learn more about this amazing man, Dr. Robert E. Kind.

Dr. James Peddie and Dr. Linda Reeve Peddie had a tremendous contribution in putting CVVH on the map. Both are well known for their work on exotic animals and spent more than 15 years as veterinarians to some of the most famous Hollywood animal actors, including stars from the movies Dances With Wolves, Operation Dumbo Drop, and Evan Almighty. They both continue to be active politically in important issues in veterinary medicine.
