Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercise uses targeted, individualized activities to help pets build strength, balance, coordination, and mobility while supporting recovery and improving overall quality of life.

Overview

Therapeutic exercise is a cornerstone of veterinary rehabilitation, helping pets safely regain strength, improve mobility, and return to their daily activities. Just as strengthening and conditioning exercises are an important part of human physical therapy, targeted exercise plays a critical role in helping animals recover from injury, surgery, illness, and neurologic conditions.

Each exercise is carefully selected based on your pet’s individual needs, abilities, and rehabilitation goals. Exercises can be adjusted as your pet progresses, allowing us to gradually increase strength and challenge while maintaining proper form and comfort.

Conditions That May Benefit from Therapeutic Exercise

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

  • Orthopedic injuries and conditions

  • Arthritis and chronic joint disease

  • Neurologic conditions and mobility challenges

  • Muscle weakness and loss of strength

  • Balance and coordination deficits

  • Gait abnormalities

  • Generalized weakness and deconditioning

Benefits of Therapeutic Exercise

Targeted therapeutic exercises may help pets:

  • Build and maintain muscle strength

  • Improve balance and coordination

  • Increase joint mobility and flexibility

  • Improve body awareness and movement patterns

  • Restore more efficient and symmetrical movement

  • Reduce compensatory movement patterns

  • Improve confidence and independence

  • Support a safe return to normal activities

Specialized Rehabilitation Equipment

Our rehabilitation team uses a variety of specialized equipment to create engaging and progressive exercise programs, including:

  • Cavaletti poles – Encourage controlled limb movement, coordination, and range of motion.

  • Balance equipment – Challenges stability, core strength, and body awareness.

  • Stairs and ramps – Help improve functional strength and confidence with everyday movements.

  • Strength and coordination tools – Provide targeted challenges to develop muscle control, balance, and mobility.

Every therapeutic exercise program is customized to your pet's unique condition, abilities, and goals. As your pet becomes stronger and more confident, exercises can be progressively modified to continue supporting their recovery and long-term mobility.
